Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery
Education Opportunities
The Harvard Medical School Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery provides comprehensive subspecialty training in otolaryngology, including exposure to head and neck oncology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, thyroid and parathyroid surgery, rhinology, laryngology, otology and neurotology, and pediatric otolaryngology.
Based at Mass Eye and Ear and under the direction of Mark A. Varvares, MD, FACS, the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery offers otolaryngology training at various levels, including residency training, clinical fellowships, research fellowships, post-doctoral training, and medical student education and sub-internships.
Medical Student Education
Students in their third year at Harvard Medical School are assigned a one-week rotation at an otolaryngology service in one of the following Boston-area hospitals: Mass Eye and Ear, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, or Cambridge Health Alliance. The experience offers exposure to busy clinical practices in otolaryngology.
For medical students interested in a career in otolaryngology, Mass Eye and Ear offers a four-week sub-internship to fourth year medical students.

Residency Program
The Harvard Medical School / Mass Eye and Ear Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program has a long tradition of providing residents with strong foundations in all aspects of otolaryngology–head and neck surgery. Since our educational efforts began with our first residency class in 1830, the program has grown to include more than 100 faculty members at four clinical venues.

Fellowship Program
Harvard Medical School offers clinical fellowships in otolaryngology subspecialties at Mass. Eye and Ear, including neurotology, head and neck surgical oncology, thyroid and parathyroid surgery, laryngology, rhinology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, and pediatric otolaryngology.
