Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Outcomes

Rhinology

Endoscopic sinus surgery has been shown to improve the quality of life of patients with chronic sinusitis, an inflammatory disorder of the paranasal sinuses, and reduce both the severity of sinonasal symptoms and the frequency of sinus infections. From 2019 to 2021, surgeons at Mass Eye and Ear performed more than 1,900 sinus surgeries.

Prescribed antibiotics and steroids after sinus surgery

One marker of success for endoscopic sinus surgery is a reduction in the need for antibiotics and oral steroids following surgery. Over a three-year study period, patients at Mass Eye and Ear consistently required fewer prescriptions for antibiotics and steroids after sinus surgery. This improvement continued one year after surgery, which highlights a long-term improvement in symptoms.

Patient charts were reviewed for 12 months following surgery and all prescription of antibiotics or oral steroids were recorded. Overall, there was a persistent and consistent trend in decreasing the disease burden of chronic sinusitis following endoscopic sinus surgery.
