What is the Cornea?
The cornea is the eye's outermost layer. It is the clear, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye, and it plays an important part in the eye's visual acuity.
Latest Advancements in Cornea Treatment
Our Cornea Service has been at the forefront of many medical and surgical advances in the field. New treatments are available for patients with severe corneal scarring, including:
- Stem cell transplantation
- Ocular surface reconstruction
- Lamellar keratoplasty
- Artificial cornea transplantations (called keratoprosthesis)
Expert Care for Complex Conditions
Our Cornea Service is also a national resource for the management of difficult-to-treat and sight-threatening diseases, such as severe corneal ulcers, viral diseases, and severe cases of ocular surface disease.
Burn Consultation at Shriner’s/MGH
The Mass Eye and Ear Cornea Fellow on the Burn Service provides consultation services to patients at the Shriner’s Hospital and the Massachusetts General Hospital Burn Service. During business hours, call (617) 573-4443. After hours, call the Emergency Department at (617) 573-3431.
