Ophthalmology
Center for Thyroid Eye Disease and Orbital Surgery
This multidisciplinary center provides coordinated, state-of-the-art care for patients with thyroid eye disease and tumors in the eye socket.
Unmatched Expertise
Patients receive team-oriented care from leading experts at Mass. Eye and Ear's main campus (243 Charles Street). Led by Suzanne K. Freitag, MD; Dean M. Cestari, MD; and Benjamin S. Bleier, MD, our team of doctors includes leading experts in ophthalmic plastic surgery, endoscopic orbital surgery, otolaryngology, strabismus surgery, thyroid gland disorders, neurosurgery, and head and neck oncology.
Surgeons at the Center are also pioneers in developing novel, minimally invasive techniques that result in less pain and a faster recovery time for our patients.
Innovations in Research and Patient Care
Our physicians are conducting cutting-edge research to advance care for patients with thyroid eye disease and orbital tumors. As a result, they have developed several new, minimally invasive surgical approaches.

Advances in Thyroid Eye Disease Care
Our team performs minimally invasive surgical approaches, such as endoscopic orbital decompression surgery, for thyroid eye disease. Because these delicate, state-of-the-art surgeries are performed through the nose (instead of a large incision near the eye), there are fewer risks of complications, such as scarring, infection, and double vision. Patients also experience a shorter hospital stay, faster healing time, and less pain compared to traditional surgeries.
Advances in Orbital Tumor Care
Our team has pioneered new methods to access difficult-to-reach tumors in the eye socket and then repair the eye socket after tumor removal. Instead of making a large incision near the eye and removing part of the bone, doctors are often able to perform surgery through the nose. This results in a shorter hospital stay (many patients are able to go home in less than 24 hours), less pain, and improved function and appearance.
