Computed Tomography (CT)
Computed Tomography or more commonly known as a CT or CAT scan is a type of X-Ray that develops a cross section of the body tissues and organs. CT imaging gives a detailed look at the internal structures and can help with rapid diagnosis of infections, tumors, inflammatory processes or abnormalities involving vessels. A CT is usually requested because both soft tissue and bone injuries, as well as vascular injuries, can be evaluated.
Our department here at Massachusetts Eye and Ear can perform 3D manipulation of the inner ear canal, vessels in the head and neck and various other anatomy located in the head and neck region. This is performed on a separate work station after your imaging study is complete. By having this tool, it can better help in our diagnosis, treatment and surgical planning.
Information for Patients
At Massachusetts Eye and Ear we specialize in imaging of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat, but we are able to scan many other areas as needed. Some of the most frequent exams we do are guided biopsies or drainages, brain, orbit or sinus, temporal bones, neck, chest, abdomen and pelvis and CT angiography.
Most CT exams require an IV contrast, if you will be receiving IV contrast please follow the before and after guidelines given to you by your doctor and/or in the exam preparation document.
Massachusetts Eye and Ear is an accredited facility by the American College of Radiology in Computed Tomography. Our staff has also pledged to take part in the radiation reduction dose techniques for Image Gently. The Image Gently program was created to raise awareness on methods to reduce the radiation during pediatric CT exams. Our CT scanner is equipped with radiation reduction software to aide in less radiation dose to the patient.
