Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
An MRI uses radio waves and a magnetic field to generate high quality, detailed images of the brain, spinal cord, bones, joints, soft tissues and blood vessels.
To create the images needed the MRI machines emit sounds/noise. Each image that is taken during an exam has a unique sound/noise therefore hearing protection is provided.
We have two MRI machines on site; the newest machine is in an ambient suite. The ambient suite uses special blue lighting which has been shown to reduce stress and help patients relax during exams. Helping patients to stay relaxed and calm during the MRI exam will help the technologists produce high quality and clear images.
Information for Patients
At Massachusetts Eye and Ear we specialize in imaging of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat, but we are able to scan many other areas as needed. Some examples of popular exams we perform are brain, orbit, MRA neck/brain, neck, nasopharynx, temporomandibular joints, temporal bone, MRA lower extremities, and cervical spine.
Most MRI exams require an IV contrast, if you will be receiving IV contrast please follow the before and after guidelines given to you by your doctor and/or in the exam preparation document.
For pediatric care we have adopted the MRI Swaddle Study for the safest way to sedate a child using a natural sleep method.
