Boston, Mass. — Massachusetts Eye and Ear has been recognized as the no. 1 hospital in New England for ophthalmology (eye care) and otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat care) by U.S. News & World Report in the 2020-2021 “Best Hospitals” issue. This continues a streak of 30 years as the top-ranked hospital in New England for these two medical specialties since the rankings’ inception in 1990.
In the national rankings, the Mass Eye and Ear/Mass General Department of Ophthalmology earned the no. 4 national ranking (no. 1 in New England). The ophthalmology ranking is based solely on a reputational survey of board-certified ophthalmologists around the country.
The Mass Eye and Ear/Mass General Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery earned the no. 6 ranking for U.S. programs.
The otolaryngology ranking is based on many factors, including quality of care, patient safety and national reputation among board-certified otolaryngologists.
“We share in the excitement of this great achievement with all of our staff, who we can’t thank enough for helping us earn this tremendous honor,” said John Fernandez, President of Mass Eye and Ear. “We should all take great pride in these honors, as they demonstrate the outstanding care we strive to deliver to our patients, and commitment to cutting edge medical research advances, and training future generations of talented care providers.”
In 2009, Mass Eye and Ear and Mass General announced that Mass Eye and Ear physicians would lead and staff the Departments of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology at Mass General, which is why both hospitals are named in the ranking.
