EVO ICL
What is EVO ICL?
Implantable Collamer® Lens (EVO ICL), or ICL surgery, is a special type of implantable lens that corrects nearsightedness, with or without astigmatism, through a minimally invasive procedure.
Mass Eye and Ear surgeons use the latest technology and equipment for laser vision correction surgery, including highly precise lasers. Our specialty trained doctors perform the full spectrum of vision correction surgeries, including the most advanced minimally invasive techniques.
How does EVO ICL work?
In this 10–15-minute surgery, a biocompatible lens is placed between your iris (the colored part of the eye) and your natural crystalline lens. Because surgery does not involve removal of the corneal tissue, the implant works in harmony with your natural eye and can be reversed if needed.
Unlike some other vision correction procedures, EVO ICL does not cause dry eye syndrome. It preserves your natural eye structure while providing clear vision, day and night.
ICL surgery does not correct presbyopia, the age-related near-vision loss that typically begins after age 40 when the eye’s natural lens loses its ability to focus.
What are the benefits of EVO ICL?
An implantable collamer lens can:
- Fix severe nearsightedness and astigmatism that can’t be corrected with other surgeries
- Be less likely to cause dry eyes or make chronic eye dryness worse
- Be safely removed if needed
- Provide great night vision
- Allow for a quick recovery, similar to other laser vision correction options
- Offer an option for patients who are not candidates for laser eye surgery
Who is a good candidate for ICL surgery?
You may be a good candidate for ICL if you:
- Are between 21 and 45 years old
- Have nearsightedness, with or without astigmatism
- Have healthy eyes and a stable vision prescription for at least one year
- Have been told you are not eligible for other laser vision correction procedures because your prescription is too strong or the condition of your cornea is too poor
ICLs are not suitable for everyone. Be sure to tell your eye surgeon if you are pregnant or nursing, as hormone changes can impact the outcome of the procedure. Additionally, if you have chronic, degenerative, or autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or diabetes, certain medications (steroids, immunosuppressants) may interfere with the healing process.
How long does it take to recover from ICL surgery?
Most patients notice improved vision right after EVO ICL surgery, but it is normal for vision to be blurry or hazy during the recovery and healing process.
You will receive instructions about medications, including a schedule for prescription eye drops to reduce inflammation and prevent infection.
Most patients can return to work and driving a couple of days after EVO ICL surgery, though complete recovery may take several weeks.
