What is Refractive Lens Exchange?

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is a vision correction procedure in which the eye’s natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). It can treat refractive errors such as:

  • Nearsightedness (myopia)
  • Farsightedness (hyperopia)
  • Astigmatism
  • Presbyopia (age-related loss of near vision)

RLE is most often considered for adults over age 40 who want to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

How does RLE surgery work?

RLE is very similar to cataract surgery and is typically performed on an outpatient procedure. This allows you to return home the same day.

The surgery takes about 15 minutes per eye. During the procedure:

  1. A small incision is made in the cornea
  2. Ultrasound energy is used to gently break up the natural lens.
  3. The lens is removed and replaced with an IOL.

There are different types of IOLs available, including monofocal, multifocal, and accommodating lenses. Each are designed with their own benefits and considerations. Which IOL works best for you will depend on your individual needs and lifestyle.

Long-term advantages of RLE

RLE is often recommended if you are not a good candidate for LASIK or other laser vision correction procedures.

Permanent vision correction

Unlike other procedures that may need to be repeated over time, RLE provides a permanent solution for refractive errors. This means that you can enjoy clear vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses for many years to come.

Cataract prevention

Because the natural lens is removed, you will not develop cataracts in the future.

Comprehensive vision improvement

RLE can correct multiple vision problems at once. In addition to correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, RLE can also address presbyopia by using multifocal or accommodating IOLs. This means that patients can potentially achieve clear vision at all distances, reducing their dependence on reading glasses or bifocals.

Who is a candidate for RLE?

You may be a good candidate for RLE surgery if you:

  • Are over 40 years old
  • Have a high prescription for glasses or contact lenses
  • Experience presbyopia and have difficulty focusing on close objects
  • Have extreme nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism that makes you unsuitable for LASIK or other laser vision correction procedures
  • Have a stable vision prescription
  • Have good overall eye health
