Quality and Outcomes 2021

Increasing Access to Quality and Outcomes Data

Mass Eye and Ear is the primary teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School’s Department of Ophthalmology and a member of the Mass General Brigham system, providing specialty ophthalmic care to patients from all over the country and world. Consistently recognized as one of the nation’s top hospitals for eye care, we are always looking to the future and striving for improvement.

Since 2010, Mass Eye and Ear has led the development and implementation of outcomes measures for the field of ophthalmology. We have consistently reported on these measures in our Quality and Outcomes annual report to promote transparency in ophthalmology and to hold ourselves accountable to providing the best care for our patients. We aim to establish universal standards that may be adopted and reported by ophthalmologists across the country, by defining and sharing clinical outcomes across all subspecialty areas.

This latest edition includes patient outcomes data through calendar year 2020. Given the effects of Covid-19 our data look slightly different compared to prior years. Reported volume is lower due to a reduction in elective care and a reduction in follow-up rates. We are pleased to report that our reported outcomes from 2020 are still excellent, despite the challenges of Covid-19. However, we are cognizant that patients have delayed and missed care over the past two years and continue to monitor the effects of this on clinical outcomes.

We are grateful to our outcomes team, and all of our clinicians, technicians, nurses and staff members at Mass Eye and Ear, who provide the highest quality care to our patients each and every day.
