Otopathology Laboratory
International Otopathology Society
The International Otopathology Society, also known as the “Schuknecht Society,” is dedicated to the study of the pathology of the temporal bone. This includes the study of pathologic findings in all conditions that affect hearing, balance and the facial nerve.
2025 International Otopathology Society Meeting

Meeting Details
Every three years, the society hosts a three-day conference dedicated to the study of otopathology. Society members from around the globe are invited to attend the meeting at Mass Eye and Ear in Boston, Massachusetts.
Over the years, the society and its meeting have grown, now attracting not only former research fellows of Dr. Schuknecht and the Otopathology Laboratory but also those with an interest in human otopathology, including both physicians and scientists. The society now has more than 150 members from more than 35 countries and continues to grow each year.
The next meeting will be from June 8-10, 2025.

Hotel accommodations are available at the Liberty Hotel (617-224-4000) and the Wyndham at Beacon Hill (617-742-7630).
Both establishments are within walking distance of Mass Eye and Ear. It would be advisable to reserve rooms as early as June 2024, as Boston is a very busy during this particular time of year.

Harold F. Schuknecht Award
In order to increase the interest of young investigators in otopathology and encourage their involvement in the Society and its meetings, an award will be given for the best paper presented by a trainee or young investigator.
The award carries a $1,000 cash prize to help defray travel expenses. Click here for nomination form.
Saumil N. Merchant Award
This new travel award started in 2013 as a remembrance of the career and accomplishments of Saumil Merchant. This award in his honor will be awarded for the best human otopathology paper given by a young investigator and will include a $1,000 cash prize to help defray travel expenses as well.
